First Steps in Sofia – moments worth capturing on camera

The first steps are that sweet moment between being a baby and becoming a “big kid”—they still have chubby little feet, but they’re already running around the living room and no one can catch up to them.
And for Mom and Dad, this isn’t just a ritual, but the child’s first real “little celebration, bringing together grandparents, relatives, and lots of laughter.

As a first-step photographer and family photographer in Sofia, I see how important it is for families that this day isn’t just spent in the hustle and bustle of cooking, but is also captured in photos—ones that you can show your now-grown child years from now:
“Hey, look, here they chose the roulette wheel over the pencil, and still made it to college.” 😄

What a first-day-of-school celebration is really like—not according to the textbook, but in real life

Usually, the day is simple in structure but full of memorable moments:

  • Preparations – Mom and the grandmothers set the table, choose the items, and arrange the traditional bread.

  • The guests arrive—hugs, gifts, “Let’s see how much this little one has grown.”

  • The big moment—bare feet on a towel or a special mat, items arranged on the table, on the floor at home, or on a blanket out on the lawn, just like at this first-step celebration.

  • Then it turned into a little family frenzy: taking pictures with everyone; the child had relaxed and was starting to have fun.

I always try not to interfere with the natural flow of things—kids don’t like being directed.
When you let them be themselves, the photos turn out the most authentic.

What makes a photographer at a first-birthday party different from just "the guy with the phone"?

Moms often ask me, “Hey, why should we hire a photographer for the first steps celebration? Doesn’t everyone just take pictures with their phones?”

The difference lies in a few small but important details:

1. You're with the child, not with the camera

When there’s a photographer around, Mom and Dad don’t have to worry about taking pictures —they don’t run around with their phones, and they don’t have to check the angles and lighting.
They’re living in the moment with their child, and I take care of everything:

  • to have footage of the ritual,

  • to have family photos with everyone,

  • to include details—the cake, the objects, the reactions.

2. I capture what’s “between the frames”

Yes, there is a "crucial moment"—choosing a subject.
But between:

  • the grandmothers' laughter,

  • Dad's comments,

  • the look on the child's face as he wonders which way to go,

that's where the real talent is born.

That’s exactly where a child’s personality really shines through —whether they’re careful, impulsive, curious, or stubborn… and all of that is captured in a photo.

3. Light, Composition, and Memories That Age Gracefully

First steps are often:

  • in an apartment,

  • in a house,

  • at a restaurant,

  • sometimes in the yard or garden.

The lighting isn't always ideal—lamps, mixed lighting, windows…
This is where the professional part comes in—to make sure that:

  • so that the skin looks natural,

  • the colors should be warm and pleasant,

  • No "greasy" shadows or smudged faces.

These aren’t just photos for Facebook— they’re memories you’ll still be looking back on in 15 to 20 years.

A first birthday party at home, at a restaurant, or in the backyard—which is best?

The common question: “Where’s the best place to do it—at home or at a restaurant?”

The answer is simple— wherever you feel at ease.

The ritual can be performed in many different ways— at the table in the living room, on the floor on a towel, or on a green lawn with a tablecloth and a special path for the little ones to walk on. The important thing is that it’s comfortable for the child and that there’s room for everyone.

  • First Steps at Home
    – a cozy atmosphere, fewer people, the child is in their own environment.
    – the photos turn out very personal – the child’s room, the toys, the familiar corners.

  • A baby shower at a restaurant
    – a convenient option if you’re expecting a larger group of guests.
    – there’s usually more space for group photos and games.

  • A playground in the yard / a house with a garden
    – a great option if it’s warm – natural light, greenery, and plenty of space for the kids.
    – the lawn and the blanket offer plenty of opportunities for playful shots.

For me, as a photographer, there’s no such thing as “right” or “wrong.”
The important thing is that the child is comfortable and you’re not panicking—then the photos just happen naturally.

How my first steps go—in a nutshell

We usually do the following:

  1. A brief tour and introduction
    – I arrive a little early, get to know the child and the family,
    – I check the lighting and choose a spot for the ritual—a table, the floor, or a lawn.

  2. A documentary account
    – I film the preparations, the decorations, and the welcoming of guests,
    – I don’t make you “act”—I simply capture the real moments.

  3. The ritual itself
    – the bare feet, the cloth or path, the objects, everyone’s reactions,
    – a few more composed shots with loved ones afterward.

  4. Family photos and games
    – photos with Mom, Dad, Grandma, Grandpa, godparents, friends,
    – if there’s time – and a little “mini photo shoot” with just the child.

Why the first steps are important not only today, but also years from now

Bread-baking, naming ceremonies, first steps, baptisms, birthdays…
These are all stages a family goes through without even realizing when the child has grown up.

A baby’s first steps mark a moment of transition
from a baby you carry in your arms to a little person who chooses where to go on their own.

That is why I believe it is worth having:

  • not just phone photos,

  • and a complete photo story of the day.
