Photographer for Pogacha in Sofia: Traditions, Rituals and Prices (2026)

Baby cake: Tradition, rituals and unforgettable moments

Hello! I am Simeon Salov – a professional photographer specializing in capturing family events. Today I will tell you about one of the most beautiful and emotional Bulgarian traditions: the baby cake.

This ancient ritual, which marks the 40th day after the birth of a newborn, is a moment of blessing and joy. As a photographer for the pogacha in Sofia, I often have the privilege of capturing these first celebrations that bring together the closest women around the new life.

What is a baby cake?

According to belief, until the 40th day, the mother and baby are in a period of "impurity" and are kept away from outside eyes. On this day, a purification ritual is performed, to which only women - "orisnitsi" - are invited.

Main elements of the tradition:

  • Sweet pita bread: Made with white flour, milk, and honey, it symbolizes the "sweet" life of a child.

  • Breaking the bread: It is performed over the head of the mother and baby, who are covered with a white cloth.

  • Description: Each guest leaves money in the towel and wishes the baby health, luck, and prosperity.

  • Climbing high: The towel with the first pieces of the pita bread is placed in a high place in the home so that the child grows tall and successful.

This tradition is a bridge to our roots, much like wedding photography or christening photography, where emotion and symbolism intertwine into an unforgettable story.

Why choose a professional photographer for your wedding?

Pogacha is an intimate, homely celebration, filled with details that can easily be missed – the grandmother's smile, the mother's excitement, the baby's tiny hands.

What do you gain with Simeon Salov:

  1. Discretion: Shooting without flash to avoid scaring the baby.

  2. Focus on detail: Shots of the pita bread, gifts, and ritual objects.

Often the pogacha is just the beginning. Many of my clients, for whom I was a wedding photographer, continue to trust me for the pogacha, and later as a baptism photographer in Sofia.

The opportunity to follow your family's growth through my lens is the greatest reward for me. We can combine services to capture all the important milestones – from the graduation, through the cake, to the first birthday.
