Difference between church and civil marriage – why one is a vow and the other an obligation.

  Every love story has its climax – the moment when two people say “I do”.
But while a civil marriage is an act of law, a church marriage is a vow before God.
And although both ceremonies look similar – with flowers, smiles and champagne – the difference between them is profound and important: one legalizes, while the other sanctifies.

⚖️ What is civil marriage?

Civil marriage is the only legally recognized marriage in Bulgaria.
It takes place in a ritual hall or in the municipality, and is mandatoryif you want your union to have legal force.
After signing, the couple already has joint property, surname, inheritance rights and all legal protections.

📜 What is needed for a church marriage

For a wedding in an Orthodox church, you will need to prepare:

  • Certificate of civil marriage - without it, the priest is not entitled to perform a wedding;

  • Baptismal certificates of the newlyweds;

  • Two godparents, who must also be baptized Orthodox Christians;

  • Two wedding rings, which are blessed during the ritual;

  • Champagne and bread – a symbol of shared joy and prosperity;

  • Icons – usually "Christ" and "Virgin Mary", given by the godparents;

  • (Optional) flowers, wreaths, candles and bottles of wine – for beauty and tradition.

💡 Important: A church marriage cannot be performedif the couple does not have a civil marriage. However, the opposite is possible - you can only have a civil marriage, without a wedding.

💡 The difference between the two ceremonies

One is an official act before the law, the other – a blessing before God.
Civil marriage creates a family legally, while church marriage gives it a spiritual meaning.
When the two newlyweds decide to combine both ceremonies, completeness is achieved – law and faith, signature and blessing.
